"You're A Star" Black and Gold Graduation Cake

I had such a great time working on this black and gold graduation cake.

This cake was iced entirely out of buttercream. You don't have to cover a cake in fondant to receive that elegant look. Only the decorations were made out of fondant.

The for the cap, the top was a cardboard square covered with black fondant. The tassel was made to look like the real thing and then painted gold.

A fondant diploma with a gold bow fits perfectly on the lower tier. Stripes of black and gold cover a pale yellow iced tier.

Congratulations Class of 2009!

The" 2009" was also made out of fondant. Whenever you are decorating with dark colors you have the risk of the color bleeding especially in the hot and humid Chicago weather, so black buttercream was avoided.

The bottom tier was covered with an assortment of stars of different sizes and color, matching striped tier. I love how the hand painted gold stripes look.

"Andreya" was written on a pale yellow fondant plaque with edible black marker. Gold dragees were also used.

For the star picks, I bought 20 gage black and gold jewelry wire at the local craft store and cut into desired lengths.

I dipped the end of the cut wire into a beaten egg white and then place into the centers of prepared fondant stars.
I finished the stars with an assortment of decorations. I brushed some with metallic gold and some with edible gold glitter, which really sparkles.

Wilton have created a line of sparkle piping gels and pearlized sprinkles. The gold gel I piped along the sides of the striped tier and next to the dragees.

A labor of love.

Get Fruity!

OK, I'm pushing the fruit this summer. Look at this strawberry marble cake getting ready to be baked off. It looks so yummy, right! Wait till you see the finished product. Just enough chocolate.
I topped these strawberry cupcakes with lime green margarita buttercream and a fresh strawberry wedge. I fold frozen concentrate margarita mix to my buttercream recipe.

I am stacking 2 pineapple upside-down cakes together, filling and icing them with cream cheese icing. The batter is super moist and laced with crushed pineapple. This deluxe version of a classic is a definite crowd pleaser.

Go with a fruity alternative with your cakes this summer.

Bridal Shower Cake

I think I get the best decorating ideas or inspiration from wedding invitations.
This cream and celery colored invite can easily be incorporated into a cake. The navy was the perfect accent color for the script. This invitation was made by Mighty Nice. There website is mighty-nice.com.

The piped decoration was continued along sides of cake.

Don't overlook the beauty of a wedding invitation.

50TH Wedding Anniversary Cake

The happliy married couple of 50 years had to love this cake. Seeing their young little babies smiling back at them. Awww...the memories!
The photos were laminated to advoid being damaged by the buttercream icing.

Beautiful decorative gold ribbon was tied around the bottom base of cake tiers. I used wired ribbon so bow holds it shape.
Adding a few gold dragees for an extra finishing touch.

Pretty piped scroll work circled the photos like framed art.

Personlize your cake with memories!

Communion Cakes

Here are the communion cakes from this past weekend.

I used the invitation from Kaitlynn's Communion to come up with this design. Coloring the icing to get the exact shade of pink took the longest time but well worth it. I think the simple the design the more elegant the cake looks.

I can honestly say I have become quite the expert decorating those cross cookies. I'm sure you all have seen your share, but I had to add this photo. They look so pretty.

Freehand Drawing

I think in all these years I have been decorating cakes trying to improve my craft, the one thing that just doesn't seem to get any easier is drawing on cakes. Especially life like drawings. For that, I think you need to be a trained artist.

You have to get their nose just in the right spot. Positioned so perfectly in between the eyes. And do not forget the mouth. You have to have the perfect ratio of lip to teeth. Too much lip and we are looking at a Mick Jagger disaster.

Here is my Disney rendition of Cinderella.

All those years of making sheet pan after sheet pan of roses seem to pay off.

Elizabeth was happy! How cute is she?!

Maybe a few drawing classes will be in the near future.
